Open Message to Overseas Students and Residents in Neville’s Cross and Durham City

by Grenville Holland on 30 April, 2018

Dear Overseas Resident,

Following the debate I led on the EU referendum in 2016, and updated in 2018, I am writing to all overseas residents in Durham City to answer a key question:

What is the point voting in a local Parish Council election in Durham City?

And, what has it got to do with me?

As an overseas resident working or studying in Durham this is NOT the time to opt out of your democratic rights.

The changes threatened by Brexit are unacceptable to those of us who value the fairness, tolerance and cultural diversity that have made Britain so attractive to international visitors.

People from all over the world have made Britain their home and have contributed richly to our wealth and culture. We are appalled by the disgraceful way in which so many have been treated over recent months and years.

Only one national political party in the UK has campaigned consistently against Brexit and all that it means: The Liberal Democrats.

By voting on Liberal Democrat 3 May, you can help to swell the rising voice that is crying out against Brexit and what it may mean for the future of people like yourselves in this country

You do have the right to vote in local elections and that is the only time that you can cast your vote. So, on Thursday May 3rd use that vote and let your voice be heard.

* If you care what has happened in the last year or two, please vote on Thursday.

* If you feel that your contribution to British society is being diminished and undermined, please vote on Thursday.

Use this vote that is yours by right and vote for all 8 Liberal Democrat candidates

In terms of the welfare of the city and the university, we will not let you down.

And in terms of the European Union and international accord the Liberal Democrats will always stand at your side.

Yours very sincerely,

Grenville Holland and all of the Liberal Democrat candidates.

Your 8 Liberal Democrat Candidates in Neville’s Cross

Liz Brown is a Nursery Manager working at a centre for adults with learning difficulties and mental health problems.  Liz holds several horticultural qualifications and uses them in her support and therapy role.  She was elected as one of the County Councillors in Neville’s Cross last May and has tried to promote better relations between students and residents and foster a sense of community.

Tony Cleaver is a university lecturer and writer.  Originally from London, he has lived and worked in the UK, Singapore, Chile, The Netherlands and Colombia.  He has authored two texts on economics, four novels and a collection of short stories. Tony has four sons, is married to a Colombian and over the last 20 years has alternated between living in Bogota and Durham. Now settled here, he is a committed environmentalist and sees part of the Parish Council’s job as protecting the Green Belt and the setting of the World Heritage site that is Durham Cathedral.

Alan Doig was a postgraduate at Durham University before following an academic career at Liverpool and Teesside Business Schools where he specialised in financial crime management. He has lived in Nevilles Cross for nearly 20 years and is keen to ensure that that residents’ concerns help define the future of the City.  He would be proud to represent you on the Parish Council.

Grenville Holland was educated at Oxford and Yale and came to Durham in 1965 when he joined the Department of Earth Sciences.  Over the next 40 years he travelled widely and developed strong international links in Canada, USA, West Indies, India, Sri Lanka, South Africa and Hungary. In 1981 he became a founder member of the SDP, and from 1987 onwards was a Councillor in Durham City for 30 years developing an extensive range of skills and experience in planning, environment and leisure.

Gary Oswald was bred and born in County Durham.  He works as a lab technician at Durham University.  As a homeowner and resident he shares many concerns with most residents and would do his best to address those concerns.  He would like to see a Parish Council that is more than a talking shop.  It needs to set practical and achievable goals and work to give residents of Durham City the best deal possible.

Elizabeth Scott has an MBA from Durham University as well as a degree in Psychology from Leicester University.  She is an Honorary Entrepreneurial Fellow in the Business School and mentors post-graduate students at Durham University Business School.  She is Director of Rainbow End Coaching Ltd and also runs a successful Smallholding and Livery Yard in Durham alongside her husband and four children.  She is one of the County Councillors in Neville’s Cross.

Mandeep Smith was formerly a Method Development Chemist at GlaxoSmithKline and took up the national role of Business Development Manager for CY Partners Recruitment.  After a degree in Chemistry from Keele University and a Masters in Analytical Chemistry from Teesside University she spent nine years in the Chemical and Process Industries, mainly in management and recruiting roles.  She will bring considerable managerial skills to the new Parish Council.

Andrew Tibbs is a part-time mature student studying for a PhD in Roman Archaeology.  With a BA in Politics he went on to gain an MA in Archaeology in 2004.  He then pursued a career in communications and public relations before deciding to return to university to take his PHD in Roman archaeology.  Until recently he was Vice-Principal of St Cuthbert’s Society.  He believes that we need to unite as part of the Parish Council to make Durham City a better place to live and work.
