Durham Alliance at County Hall

by Grenville Holland on 2 June, 2021

It is very pleasing to have seen the parties come together for the good of the county and form an Alliance (“Joint Administration” as some have called it) to run Durham County Council.

It is, of course, an exciting year for Amanda Hopgood who becomes the first leader of the Alliance at County Hall, and the first lady leader in the history of Durham County Council.

I am already back to work with many of your requests coming in.

It seems that there will be two key portfolio holders in the Alliance with whom I will be working.

Councillor James Rowlandson, who is the “Portfolio Holder for Resources, Investment, and Assets” which includes:

  • Housing strategy
  • Private sector housing issues
  • Links with Housing providers
  • Assets (land and property)
  • Parks
  • Allotments
  • Sport and Leisure
  • Strategic Employment Sites
  • Funded projects / external investment

I am looking forward to working with and meeting Councillor Rowlandson as soon as possible to learn his strategy for the growth of sport in Durham.

I am also particularly pleased that Councillor Mark Wilkes, a hardworking and talented councillor, is the new Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods and Climate Change, with his portfolio including:

  • Relationships with Town and Parish Councils
  • Community Development
  • Community Facilities
  • Neighbourhood Streetscene
  • Climate change
  • Climate change champion: tbc
  • Environment Policy, including sustainability
  • Environment, Health, and Consumer Protection
  • Waste Management
  • Direct Services
  • Bereavement services

Again, it seems that many of your concerns here in Nevilles Cross, in particular around facilities, waste management, services, and development come under his portfolio.

A time of great change, an opportunity for improved communication and coordination of policies in County Durham and I will be holding the Alliance portfolio holders, whatever their political party, to account for the Nevilles Cross residents.

As ever, please contact me at grenvilleholland@btinternet.com and 01913842931 with any concerns you have within Nevilles Cross, and I will ensure they are dealt with as quickly as possible.
